About Us
We are a small family of two; Leah and Luis Morales. We began our breeding of Abyssinian cats in 2007 after our marriage. We met in Okinawa, Japan while we were serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, welcoming our very first litter of kittens in 2008.
After our honorable discharges, we moved to our current home in Prescott, Arizona to begin our lives as civilians, and began breeding rabbits and quail for meat to sustain our cats. Our rabbit project grew exponentially over the years, going from a backyard meat mutt project to nationally competitive show rabbits and genetically sound, rare color projects in several breeds. Several of our mini rex have placed first in their class at ARBA national conventions, as has our Rex, Britannia Petites, Netherland Dwarfs and Holland lops. Other breeds we've raised over the years include the Blanc de Hotot, New Zealand, Satin, Rhinelander, Flemish Giant, Californian, Himalayan, Velveteen Lop and Lionhead.
In 2011 we got the Silkie bantams as a source of bug control for our garden as well as production of tasty, organic eggs. We like living as independently as possible, so most of our animals provide some sort of agricultural benefit. Similarly to the growth from only pet/agricultural purposed to top producing show stock the rabbits took, the poultry have taken the same path as the rabbits, leeching into improving interesting feather types and color varieties. In 2017, we decided to expand their silkie project to include satin and sizzled silkies, and have settled on the Muskovy duck for their chosen duck breed. In addition, the Morales couple raised Nigerian Dwarf Goats, and can't wait to get back into the breed when they move to a property more appropriate for goats.
In 2010, the Morales couple found their first Abyssinian stud, "Ellington" from Pat McNiven, and then got an appropriate female, "Jasmine" from George and Beth Lewis. That pair was our exceptional start to our Abyssinian program. Our lines (Ellington to Jasmine offspring) have been utilized in the Briar Valley, Canyon Catz and Russilia lines, and show competitively all over the world, most notably in Russia. We also tried our hand at Turkish Van Cats, earning the 2nd best Turkish Van in 2012-2013, and worked to improve the breed from 2011 to 2019, sending a few exceptionally typed and marked Turkish Vans overseas for other breeding programs, including the very first TV project in Hong Kong. We hope to eventually get back into the breed, but for now, space and time has caused us to downsize for the quality of life for our cats, all of whom we adore unconditionally.
We have some senior citizen/retired from breeding kitties that do better with occasional litters of kittens instead of a steady stream of kittens, year a-round. Because we care about the happiness of our resident altered cats, we are perfectly fine with just a few litters a year so our pet cats aren't stressed with too many energetic litters of Abyssinian kittens.
We care deeply about the health of our cats and the genetics behind them that effect the longevity and health of the cat long term. We have removed a few breeding cats from our program due to the genetics behind the cat or the potential of carrying an undesirable gene, and we continually work towards utilizing only the healthiest, physically and mentally sound cats to better out beloved breed.
Leah developed a love for animals as a child, owning several exotic species as pets throughout her childhood after her parents gifted her a Quaker parakeet at the age of 9. She cared for the family cat and trained the family dogs. She eventually got a fancy rat, a beta fish, and an albino corn snake and a tarantula, all of which awakened her astonishment and interest to the extreme differences between different species and the differences in providing the best care and upkeep for each.
After her departure from the Marine Corps, Leah jumped head first into cultivating healthy and sane animals that adhere to the standard of perfection for said animal. She has since taken an extreme interest in the genetic codes behind the animals in her possession. She has been published in the Hollander magazine regarding the Vienna gene in rabbits She is currently one of the top Blue Eyed White Holland Lop breeders with clean lines in the USA, and is currently a part of the Certificate of Development for Lutino Netherland Dwarf rabbits. She plans on taking out a COD for both lutino Mini Rex and Britannia Pities.
Our rabbits are fed clippings from Leah's organic garden in the spring, summer and fall as well as an extruded complete rabbit pellet. The cats are fed a completely raw diet that includes homegrown rabbit meat and chicken. The poultry are fed a mix of a high quality crumble, game bird pellet, wild bird seed blend and oyster shell. On occasion they also get meal worms and appropriate leftovers from the kitchen. Leah got her associates for Agricultural Technology and Equine Science, and Luis earned his Bachelor's of Aeronautical Science from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.
Currently, Leah is back in school for a Performing Arts degree, projected to graduate with honors in December, 2020, and Luis is the Ground School Training Manager at Aeroguard Avaition Academy, instructing pilot students from all over the globe.
